About the Irish Congress of Southern California
Our Organization and Purpose. The Irish Congress of Southern California, Inc. ("ICSC") is a Non-profit corporation that was founded for the purpose of promoting public appreciation and knowledge of Irish culture and heritage and whose primary function is providing the San Diego Community with a quality St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish Festival in Balboa Park.
Mission. The Irish Congress is a family oriented and non-political all-volunteer organization that supports and encourages participation in many diverse activities of the Irish community that promote interest in Irish culture and heritage. ICSC sponsors an annual “Miss Colleen Pageant”, supports the "Smiling Irishman Contest", "Irish Outreach", the "Friendly Sons of St. Patrick", and the "House of Ireland in Balboa Park", among others.
Operation. The ICSC operates under the Direction of its Board of Directors whose members are elected at its annual meeting in May. The Board annually elects Officers, including a Board Chair, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Parade Chair and Parade Vice-Chairs.
ICSC has over 40 Standing Committees, listed below, appointed by the Parade Chair whose volunteer members carry out the work of organizing the annual Parade, Festival and related activities. Committees are primarily active from January through March. We always are looking for new volunteer members.
Membership. Membership in the ICSC is open to those interested in the Irish community that actively wish to support ICSC activities. The Board may approve entry into Active Membership at the Annual meeting in May after a person has served on a Committee for a full Parade season. After the initial Parade season, Membership Dues are $20 per year.
Board Members. To serve as a Board member, a person must 1) participate as an Active Member for 3 years and 2) have served as an Officer or Committee Chair and 3) be elected by the membership.
History. ICSC was founded in 1980 and the first Parade in 1981 was organized by ICSC founders Jim Foley, Vince Lynch (first President), Larry Cronin, Jim Shannon, Dave Shehan, Tom Mulcahy.
Corporate Information. ICSC is a California Non-profit corporation, qualified as Tax Exempt under IRC Section 501 (c)(3), with Tax ID # 33-0090269. It operates in accordance with its Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws that are available at ICSC meetings upon request of a Member.
Donations. Other than event income, the ICSC operates on and is solely supported by the donations it receives from individuals and businesses. Donations are tax deductible in accordance with tax law. Checks should be made payable to "ICSC" and sent to the Irish Congress, 415 Laurel St. PMB 113, San Diego, CA 92101.
Standing Committees. Members serve on our various Committees, primarily January to March.
