Hosted by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the annual  Smiling Irishman Contest is based on the Chicago election concept, with candidates earning votes for every dollar donated to their cause. The more money they raise, the better chance of their being elected. All money raised for this event is, in turn, donated to the Irish Congress to help with expenses for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The 26th Annual Smiling Irishman Contest was held January 22, 2010 at McCarter’s Grill in San Carlos. The Smiling Irishman title was claimed by Friendly Sons candidate Trevor Wessman-Lavelle. His competition included Firefighters Emerald Society candidate Brian Kneebone and David Chanelle, the vigorous Irish Congress candidate.

The three competitors sang songs, made toasts, tasted whiskey, and told jokes to show their heritage. But, in the end, it is the most money raised that counts and Wessman-Lavelle outdistanced his two rivals to claim the coveted title.

The event raised over $3,800, which was donated to the Irish Congress by the Friendly Sons.
